Scaling High-Performance Storage and AI Acceleration: My First 90 Days at Lightbits

Ninety days ago, I walked into Lightbits Labs eager to dive deep into high-performance cloud architecture. I knew storage was foundational, TCP was the network standard, and “NVMe” was the key to ultra-low latency. Today, I understand why Lightbits is revolutionizing modern data infrastructure, and I have first-hand experience – and the Google Chat scars – to prove it.

For anyone considering a similar journey, anyone at Lightbits currently, or anyone in HR: “Hi! This is going great and here is the field report.”

Week 1: Mastering Next-Gen Data Infrastructure 

My first week was less “onboarding” and more “immersion therapy” in cutting-edge storage technology. Within forty-eight hours, I was immersed in NVMe/TCP, Lightbits SDS, CSI, QoS, and Cinder—delivered at the pace of an engineering team building industry-leading infrastructure. 

While I knew the terms individually – like Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) over Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) – seeing them combined into a high-throughput, low-latency fabric was like being handed a masterclass in modern disaggregated storage architecture. By day three, I developed a coping strategy that I recommend to every new hire in deep tech: nod thoughtfully, write the acronym down, and Google it the second you’re alone. My week-one notes quickly turned into a rich repository of enterprise storage architecture and performance benchmarks. 

By week four, the bigger picture clicked. Lightbits builds high-performance software-defined storage that delivers NVMe-level performance over a standard TCP network – giving private clouds, cloud service providers, and enterprise environments the fast, elastic, high-density performance of hyperscaler infrastructure without every server hoarding its own private pile of drives. Also without applications getting stuck on hardware they’ve outgrown (the industry calls this “data gravity”). Once that landed, all the acronyms stopped being a wall of noise and started being, weirdly, kind of elegant—and I haven’t stopped talking about it since.

Week 3-6: Navigating the Operational Ecosystem 

Every company has its own ways of doing things, and learning them here has felt less like a hazing ritual and more like being handed the keys one drawer at a time. There is, delightfully, more than one Google Chat channel that could plausibly house an IT request, and I have enjoyed discovering each one personally, usually accompanied by three helpful reacts before someone points me to the right place with genuine patience. I now consider this my origin story rather than a cry for help.

I also learned the sacred and mysterious rhythms of expense reports, PTO requests, and the calendar system, which runs on its own schedule. I submitted my first expense report with the energy of someone defusing a bomb. In the end, it was just a receipt and a dropdown menu, generously explained by someone who’d clearly done it a hundred times before and still didn’t mind doing it again for me. I have never been prouder of a dropdown menu.

Week 7-10: The People (The Actual Best Part)

Here’s the truth beneath all the jokes: beyond our breakthrough technology, Lightbits’ team culture is what truly makes the experience stand out. Top-tier engineers walked me through complex architecture diagrams, approaching every question with patience, clarity, and deep expertise. I have been added to more Google Chat channels than I knew existed and gently corrected in document review with a level of tact that suggests everyone here either took the same class on Being Nice About Feedback or just genuinely likes each other. Possibly both.

The formal Mentor System was invaluable; my mentor answered hundreds of technical questions with technical precision and endless patience. It’s clear that Lightbits excels not only at building high-performance storage solutions but also at cultivating top-tier talent. 

Day 90 (Plus an AI Inference Innovation): State of the Onboarding

Where does that leave me, ninety days in? 

  • I can now say “NVMe/TCP” out loud without an internal footnote explaining it to myself. 
  • I know which Google Chat channel to use, most of the time, navigating our internal systems with speed and confidence. I have submitted an expense report and lived to tell the tale. 
  • I can clearly explain why enterprises running workloads, VMs, or Kubernetes containers at scale choose Lightbits block storage over managing complex, local drive arrays. Just as I mastered the acronym landscape, Lightbits introduced its next big groundbreaking innovation: the Inferra engine for AI acceleration.  Beyond solving drive-density and latency challenges for block storage, Lightbits is now solving memory bottlenecks in LLM inference by optimizing the KV cache. By offloading and accelerating the KV cache, GPUs can handle significantly more concurrent sessions and much longer context windows without hitting memory limits or performance degradations. 

Turns out the first ninety days of a new job are basically their own kind of disaggregated system: a lot of moving, distributed components – new tech, new process, new people – that don’t feel connected at first, and then one day synchronize into a sub-millisecond, highly efficient running operation. I’m now fully prepared to expertly field customer inquiries and help customers unlock the full potential of their storage and AI infrastructure. So bring it on! 

Ten out of ten onboarding experience. I would happily get thoroughly confused by acronyms again.
